History of the hotel Berlize
41 rue du temple
formerly 19, rue Ste-Avoye.

The exact date of construction is unknown, probably around 1600. The first known owner is Adam Chevrier, Treasurer General of France in Picardy who buys it in 1617. In 1635, his son sold it to Louis Huault, Sieur de Montmagny, advisor to the King. He lives in this house with his wife Catherine Lotin until 1640. They then sell to Nicolas Faure, knight, lord of Berlize, introducer of ambassadors and foreign princes to the king.
On the death of Nicolas Faure in 1671, his heirs sell in 1680 to Claude Robert, Attorney at Châtelet.
Several successive owners live there during the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Today, it still belongs to a private owner.

In the 19th century, changes occur: from residential I'Hotel becomes 'commercial', at least on the ground floor which is rented for horse and carriage rentals. The garden and courtyard are covered with sheds of wood frame to house the carts and horse carriages. The term 'Auberge de l'Aigle d'or' dates from this period. After this, it was a garage for cars and parking.

Since 1971, under the direction of Micheline Carrance, the place is dedicated to the art of dance under the name of the Dance Center of the Marais and to Essaïon theater and Café de la Gare theater.

The main East-yard and (former) garden facing the passage has two lounges with magnificent ceilings. The large living room (now Beethoven studio) between the beams joists and beams, painted some adorned with the “M” monogram of the Sieur de Montmagny, who decorated the ceiling between 1630 and 1640. The smallest room (today Wagner studio) has flowers painted beams picturing iris, old rose, poppy and lilium flowers; the colors of these ceilings are still alive because they were covered by a ceiling (traces of Empire decoration remain) and rediscovered in the 1970s.
In this building there is a beautiful barrel-vaulted cellar (small hall of the Essaïon theater).

The South building housed horse carriages and basement stables (currently, the Essaïon theater), a round stone remaining in the court indicates the inclined plane for the passage of horses (it is now a staircase).

Three staircases are quite remarkable: the wooden balusters of the 17th century in the house along the porch, the grand staircase in the Louis XV style leading to the large reception room decorated with painted beams, and a smaller staircase with a beautiful ironwork.
